Our Story

Our story runs across decades, spans across different groups, and comes together to form who we are today.
Royal City Mission is the meeting place of many stories: of faith and service, of neighbours sharing meals, of people seeking hope and belonging. From a humble, incomplete church basement in the 1850s to a vibrant downtown hub of support today, each generation has added its own chapter. What began with small acts of hospitality has grown into a community where anyone can find a warm meal, a caring presence, and the love of Jesus in action.

50 Quebec St. Is Built.

Our building's construction was completed. Chalmers United Church (then Chalmers Presbyterian) had been worshiping in the basement since the 1850s while the sanctuary was being built. Our meal program and drop-in now operates out of that very basement, helping anyone in need.

Our Distant Foremothers

A ministry team opened an outreach mission in downtown Guelph. These 'ministering sisters' shared the Good News of Jesus by renting a storefront, serving meals to any who had need, and offering hope, dignity, and friendship, often at great personal expense. The outreach lasted until 1911. We consider these women our distant foremothers - a precursor to the work that we do today.

Home Church

Commissioned by Joshua Crossing Church in Oakville, Ontario, a small group of people started meeting together to dream, investigate, and pray about how they might best serve Guelph. This group grew and in 1992 the first worship services were held.

Our Official Start

As the group continued to meet, they decided to formalize the gathering and wrote a constitution; this was the official founding of Royal City Mission. We met in various locations around Guelph and dreaming of how we might best serve the city.

The Meal Program Begins

Meanwhile, downtown at 50 Quebec Street, a small and dedicated group of volunteers from Chalmers United Church started a food pantry serving non-perishable food items. These same volunteers started serving meals at 6pm on Saturday nights.

The food pantry expanded to become Chalmers Community Services Centre in 2006.

Saturday Night Dinners continued with the support from many churches and faith groups. In 2008, Saturday Night Dinners formally became a part of Royal City Mission's programming.

Moving Downtown

50 Quebec Street was purchased and we moved into our beautiful space.

The Life Centre

The Life Centre officially came into being. Born out of Ray of Hope's Nighlight program, the Life Centre became a defining feature of who we are. With the goal of providing a safe and loving environment for anyone who is in need, the Life Centre grew to include our Meal Program.

Weathering The Pandemic With Our Community

During the pandemic, Royal City Mission became a daytime shelter for people experiencing homelessness, navigating the chaotic and uncertain early days of COVID-19. In addition to providing a safe space for those with nowhere else to go, we served meals outside our location to anyone in need, meeting a significant community need.

Launching Two Pivotal Programs

In 2022, we launched two programs to address growing community needs. The first, our Belonging Bins program, provides secure storage bins for people experiencing homelessness. The second, our Clean Streets program, is a micro-cleaning initiative that builds life and employment skills, fosters self-reliance, and promotes healthy, vibrant public spaces by reducing trash in our downtown core.

Mornings At RCM

In 2023, we significantly expanded our services, operating from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. This expansion coincided with growing needs in Guelph, allowing us to support more people than ever before.

Sunday Drop-In Arrives

2024 was a year of resilience for Royal City Mission. While financial constraints required us to reduce some programming hours, we prioritized the community’s greatest needs. For the first time, our Drop-In opened on Sundays, filling a significant gap in local services. We also strengthened partnerships and expanded our reach, as the community came together to support vulnerable people across Guelph.

Royal City Mission continues to provide safe, welcoming spaces and programs for anyone in need, where everyone is seen, valued, and cared for.
