Open doors to so many who face closed doors...

I sit in a quiet space as I write...and yet I know in another hour we will be experiencing the daily whirlwind of life at Royal City Mission. While we love the life that our open hours bring, we also cherish the peace that down moments offer.

Keeping people safe, warm and healthy is a high priority as we navigate the complexities of life in lockdown, while also caring for those in isolation and those experiencing homelessness. We keep our doors open because so many in our community have so many doors closed to them.

Our staff and volunteers are incredible and adjust to the changing Covid regulations while still doing their best to care for individuals who have trouble following the guidelines.

One way we are caring for those who have tested positive for Covid-19 and/or are isolating is by delivering meals to areas of high risk. For the next few weeks we will be delivering 30 meals/day to one such area.

Demand is growing

During the holiday season there were lots of supports and people were in an exceptionally generous mood. Our numbers fluctuated greatly but we always had the help we needed thanks to many people who offered to serve during the holidays. Now we head into a busier season with longer waits between government cheques and the return to somewhat regular rhythms for seasonal volunteers.

We are currently serving between 100-140 meals each day and will be delivering an additional 30 meals to those who are isolated. We expect these number to grow rapidly over the next couple of weeks.

The Warming Centre attendance is also growing as there is a lack of beds in the Emergency Shelter system. People are desperate to get out of the cold weather after walking the streets or camping out overnight. We are averaging 40 people per day and are thankful that they have a space to warm up.
